Mrs. Beulah Howard, Baiocchi’s maternal great-grandmother with daughter, Annie.A legendary figure in Regina’s family, Mrs. Howard – known as “Mama Beulah”-- shared vivid recollections of her slavery experience with her family.
Mr. Howard, also known as “Papa” was believed to be of mixed Native American, Italian and African heritage. He gazes out from the front porch at the family’s home in Rutherford, Tennessee.

Baiocchi sits with Katherine Dunham protégé and ethnomusicologist, Craig Miller. Mr. Miller commissioned African Hands, which Baiocchi composed with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and performed in Seattle, Washington and Detroit, Michigan.
